آزمون آیلتس آزمونی است که به دو نوع آکادمیک و جنرال تقسیم می‌شود. داوطلبان آزمون بر اساس اهداف خود یکی از این دو را انتخاب می‌کنند. تفاوتی که در این دو نوع آزمون وجود دارد در ریدینگ و رایتینگ است. مهارت اسپیکینگ و لیسنینگ در هر دو آزمون یکسان است. کلماتی که برای این آزمون باید فرا بگیرید بسیار حائز اهمیت است و داشتن جزوه لغات آیلتس نمره شما را افزایش می‌دهد.
آیلتس به بررسی چهار مهارت تقسیم می‌شود. مهارت لیسنینگ در ۳۰ دقیقه ارزیابی می‌شود. در این پارت از آزمون داوطلبان به صدای افرادی گوش می‌کند و سپس به سؤالات پاسخ می‌دهد. به این دلیل که داوطلب باید کلمات را برای پاسخ به صورت صحیح بنویسد باید دایره لغات خود و نحوه درست نوشتنشان را تقویت کند.
مهارت ریدینگ آکادمیک ۱ ساعت زمان دارد و سه بخش است. برای پاسخگویی درست به سؤالات ریدینگ باید لغات زیادی آموزش دیده و تمرین زیادی انجام دهید. مهارت رایتینگ آکادمیک ۱ ساعت زمان می‌برد و دارای دو تسک است. بیشتر داوطلبان آزمون در این قسمت نمره کمتری می‌آورند و برای افزایش نمره، یادگیری نکات مهم و لغات اساسی لازم است.
برای اسپیکینگ ۱۰ الی ۱۵ دقیقه وقت دارد که به سه پارت تقسیم می‌شود. در این سه پارت تاپیک‌های مختلفی مورد سؤال قرار می‌گیرند که داوطلب باید با آن‌ها آشنا باشد. جزوه لغات آیلتس برای هر یک از این تاپیک‌ها بسیار کمک می‌کند.
برای این آزمون باید دایره دانستنی‌های شما باید به‌اندازه‌ای زیاد باشد که علاوه بر لغات، اصطلاحات، ترکیب‌ها و گرامر را در بر بگیرد.
